No consensus on inviting Ukraine: NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg

Brussels: The Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, declared that NATO countries do not agree on inviting Ukraine to become a full member. According to an HBO report, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg indicated on Sunday that while the alliance's relationship with Ukraine has improved, there is still no consensus on inviting Ukraine to join as a full member.

According to Stoltenberg, in order to join NATO, one must meet the standards. They help Ukraine coordinate anti-corruption measures, but they need the agreement of the 30 allies. According to reports, the North Atlantic Alliance has improved relations with Ukraine, despite the fact that Ukraine is not covered by the organization's fifth article, which allows for collective defence.

NATO claimed Ukraine would eventually become a member of the union in a political declaration at the Bucharest Summit in 2008, but refused to furnish Kiev with the Membership Action Plan, the first step in the legal procedure for joining the organisation. Ukraine has strengthened its engagement with NATO and made joining the bloc a goal since pro-Western authorities took power in 2014. In 2020, NATO designated Ukraine as an Enhanced Opportunities Partner. The alliance, on the other hand, has not promised Ukraine rapid membership.
