Guwahati : According to a press release, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (VAC) has detained a government of Assam official on suspicion of bribery. "Shashindra Nath Baishya, Controller of Assam Legal Metrology Service, was caught red-handed on Friday while accepting a bribe of Rs20,000 for issuing license from the complainant who wanted to open a shop for selling the weights and measures equipment", the statement read. The official from the Assam Legal Metrology Service (ALMS) was the subject of a complaint alleging that he sought Rs 25,000 in bribes before granting the complainant's request for a licence to open a store selling weights and measures equipment. When the complainant approached the directorate about not being willing to pay the bribe money, the sleuths allegedly set up a trap in the Controller of Legal Metrology's office nearby. As per the report, the ALMS employee was exposed while collecting a Rs 20,000 bribe from the complaint while doing so in his office chamber. He was captured by the vigilance sleuths, who also found an additional Rs 3,23,850 in his office space. A case has been filed against the official, and the required legal follow-up action is in progress, the release added.
