Operation Kaveri: India evacuates 278 people from conflict-hit Sudan

NEW DELHI: The preliminary  group of Indians was evacuated from Sudan today, April 25,, under 'Operation Kaveri'. Notoably, this was the first phase of the operation and 278 Indians were evacuated through an Indian Navy warship for Saudi Arabia's Jeddah. The group was evacuated from the conflict-hit Sudan  Sudan after civil war broke in the country as the forces of the Army and Para-military clashed.

The vessel INS Sumedha of the Indian Navy tweeted pictures of the evacuated Indians, said the spokesman for the ministry of external affairs Arindam Bagchi. "First group of stranded Indians under Operation Kaveri departs Sudan. "INS Sumedha departs Port Sudan for Jeddah with 278 crew members aboard," Bagchi tweeted.

In the midst of the bloody clashes, the Indian government has begun "Operation Kaveri" to evacuate over 3,000 Indians living in Sudan. The Indians will be transported to Jeddah by the INS Sumedha in the Port of Sudan, and from there, two transport aircraft would fly them back to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed officials to maintain emergency measures prepared while closely monitoring the evacuations.

Over 400 people have died in the Sudanese conflict, including about 250 civilians. More than 3,700 people have been hurt, according to reports from the nation, in the skirmishes that have been accompanied by airstrikes and artillery fire.

Since several nations, like the UK, France, and others opted to evacuate their diplomats from the country, the combat has lessened in severity. However, there is still a struggle for supremacy among the factions in the neighbourhoods of greater Khartoum.

The Kaveri is one of the major Indian rivers that flows through the southern states, hence the mission's name, "Operation Kaveri," has great significance. The river is revered by the locals as a spiritual site and is known as Mother Kaveri or Goddess Kaveriamma.
