Odisha seizes large consignment of drugs, arrests three

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police Special Task Force (STF) on Monday recovered brown sugar worth Rs 2.40 crore and arrested three persons from the Balasore district. An official said that acting on intelligence inputs, a team of STF arrested the drug smuggler and recovered 2.402 kg of brown sugar during a raid at Jaleswar in Balasore district.

A case has been registered against the three smugglers under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation are on. An official press release said that as part of its special drive against drugs, STF has recovered 38 kg of brown sugar and more than 84.28 quintals of ganja since 2020. More than a hundred drug dealers have been arrested during this period. The Special Task Force of Odisha Crime Branch arrested Prabhat Kumar Sahu of Ganjam district and recovered more than 990 kg of ganja and a cargo truck in Sambalpur, Odisha on Sunday itself on charges of illegal smuggling of ganja.

It is reported that the ganja was being transported from Odisha to West Bengal for supply. According to sources in STF DIG Jaynarayan Pankaj, the STF immediately initiated action after receiving information about the smuggling of a large consignment of ganja on Friday. According to information received, but a suspected cargo truck heading towards West Bengal was intercepted and searched at Mathani Chowk under Basta police station in Baleshwar district. That's where a secret place was created for smuggling in the truck. A search of the secret basement found 990 kg 600 grams of ganja hidden in it and truck driver Prabhat Kumar Sahu was immediately taken into custody. The case is under investigation.
