Mizoram: Following the outbreak of ethnic violence the previous week, 3,583 persons from Manipur ultimately fled to Mizoram, officials said on May 11.
They said that many of these people had also been offered shelter by family members. "These people were lodged at temporary relief camps across six districts of Mizoram," they added.
In all, 1,351 individuals have sought refuge, followed by 1,214 in the Saitual area and 934 in the Aizawl district, according to a statement.
It stated that the remaining 84 individuals sought refuge in the Champhai, Serchhip, and Khawzawl districts. Over 30,000 refugees from Bangladesh and Myanmar already burden Mizoram, according to state officials.
After a "Tribal Solidarity March" was arranged on May 3 throughout the 10 hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, violent skirmishes broke out in Manipur.
The anxiety over the eviction of Kuki people from reserve forest area, which had sparked a number of smaller agitations, preceded the violence.
The majority of Manipuri people, who make up around 53% of the population of Manipur, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribes, who live in the hill districts.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarians, several organisations and NGOs have urged the Manipur and Central governments to curb the ethnic violence involving all stakeholders.
