Indian government welcomes Pakistan’s decision: Kulbushan to appeal in any High Court of country

Islamabad: Pakistan's stand on the Kulbhushan Jadhav case seems to be a little softer. Pakistan's National Assembly has accepted the International Court of Justice (Review and Re-Consideration) Ordinance 2020. It has since paved the way for Jadhav to appeal against the sentenced death verdict.

According to the bill, foreign prisoners serving sentences in Pakistani jails will be able to appeal to the upper courts. Pakistan has passed the bill on the international court's verdict. In fact, the International Court of Justice had asked Pakistan to improve the Jadhav case so that justice could be served to citizens of other countries. In 2020, the Imran Khan government had promulgated an ordinance in the National Assembly in view of the ICJ's decision in kulbhushan jadhav's case even after opposition parties protested.

In April 2017, a Pakistani military court sentenced retired Indian Naval Officer Kulbhushan Jadhav to death on charges of "espionage and terrorism". India had approached the ICJ against Pakistan in the case. ICJ had ruled in July 2019 that Pakistan should "effectively review and reconsider" Jadhav's sentence and give consular access to India without delay.
