Parliamentary panel to hold crucial meeting today on 'misuse of social media'

The Parliamentary Panel of Information Technology has asked officials of The Ministry of Twitter and The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to appear before it on June 18 to discuss "control of misuse of social media platforms". According to sources, the issue of so-called 'Congress toolkit' can also be raised by the panel.

The case is related to a document on which the ruling BJP has accused the Congress of conspiring to defame the PM Narendra Modi government. However, the opposition party said the document is fake. Twitter considered some of the leaders' tweets related to toolkits to be "distorted" as 'Manipulated Media', after which the Central government asked Twitter to remove the Manipulated Media tag from those tweets.

Sources said the issue is timely and relevant for the overall discussion of the panel. The panel members want the correct explanation. According to the report of the Committee, there may be a wide range of discussions on other issues. If there is quorum, a meeting will also be held. The schedule and agenda of the meeting has been uploaded on the Lok Sabha portal. This is the first time the panel will meet since the beginning of the second wave of corona in March. The last meeting of the panel was held on March 16.
