Recently, some mobile users have reported receiving calls where they are threatened with the suspension of their mobile numbers. The callers claim to be employees of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) or related agencies. In response, TRAI has issued a clear statement denying any involvement in blocking or disconnecting mobile numbers and has alerted the public to be cautious of such scams. Sharing Information on X Platform (formerly Twitter), TRAI posted a press release to caution users against fraud schemes using the TRAI name. According to the release, scammers are attempting to deceive unsuspecting individuals, inducing fear and pressuring them into taking actions like acquiring SIM cards under their names. TRAI Secretary V. Raghunandan emphasized that, according to the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preferences Regulations (TCCCPR) of 2018, service providers can take action against fraudulent calls and messages. Victims are advised to report such incidents directly on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the Cyber Crime Help Line at 1930. Furthermore, scammers are employing various tactics to trick individuals, such as enticing them with part-time job offers, fake parcel or courier incentives, and even impersonating authorities like CBI or customs officers to create fear. As the number of cyber fraud cases continues to rise, users are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly to prevent falling victim to such scams.
