A public petition was filed in the Supreme Court of India today seeking permission to return home to migrant laborers who have been found corona negative. The Public Interest Litigation states that the government should allow these migrant laborers to travel safely to their hometowns and villages and also provide necessary transport.

Before this, the Center has asked the states and Union Territories to ensure adequate management of the security, shelter and food of the migrant laborers and people stranded there. These directives are of considerable importance in view of the recent incidents of unrest among migrant workers in Maharashtra and Gujarat. According to the government circular, states and union territories have been asked to carry out a comprehensive enumeration of migrant workers and stranded people in their districts and make all necessary arrangements to provide them food and shelter.

In addition, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has written a letter to all states and union territories to effectively comply with the detailed guidelines issued by the Union Home Ministry to ensure shelter and food security of migrant workers. States have been urged in the circular to instruct all the district collectors to review the situation immediately. They should ensure that a senior officer is in charge of each relief camp. According to the statement, "They can also seek the cooperation of a network of civic social organizations and mid-day meal centers to provide food to all migrant workers and stranded people during the lockdown."
