PM Dialysis Programme: Over 19.58-La Patients Benefit from Services

New Delhi: The Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) has been a ray of hope for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) in India. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya revealed in the Lok Sabha that an impressive number of around 19.58 lakh patients have availed dialysis services, with over 217.75 lakh hemodialysis sessions conducted.

Ensuring Dialysis Services Across the Country: The PMNDP has been a crucial lifeline for eligible beneficiaries, providing them with dialysis services free of cost. Both public-private partnership (PPP) mode and in-house mode have been operational in all district hospitals across the country. This extensive coverage has enabled patients from various states and union territories, including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, to access dialysis services at 1,403 centers in 686 districts. Impressively, 9,477 hemo-dialysis machines have been deployed for this noble cause.

Supporting Implementation Through National Health Mission

To further strengthen the implementation of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services under PMNDP, the National Health Mission (NHM) extends support to states and union territories through the annual program implementation plan (PIP). This collaborative effort has helped in effectively addressing the growing demand for dialysis services.

The PMNDP Portal: Building Renal Registries

With a vision to build renal registries in states and union territories, the government has developed the PMNDP portal. This digital platform plays a crucial role in centralizing data and ensuring streamlined services. Operational across the country, the portal has been a valuable tool in managing and coordinating dialysis facilities.

Addressing the Organ Shortage Crisis

In India, a heart-wrenching reality is that hundreds of thousands of patients languish on waiting lists at top hospitals, hoping for life-saving organs, while facing an acute shortage of donors. Currently, an estimated 200,000 people are waiting for kidney donations, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and action on organ donation.

The Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) has emerged as a beacon of hope for patients grappling with chronic kidney disease. With its extensive reach and commitment to providing free dialysis services, it has touched the lives of millions across the country. The government's efforts to promote organ donation and develop renal registries are crucial steps toward addressing the organ shortage crisis and saving more lives in the future. As the program continues to evolve and expand, it remains a testament to the power of healthcare initiatives in transforming lives and building a healthier nation.
