Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on Thursday during the India-CARICOM Summit. The two leaders discussed areas of cooperation such as science and technology, healthcare, education, climate change, and agriculture.
In a post shared on X, PM Modi expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, saying, “Had a very good meeting with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados. Our talks covered areas such as science and technology, healthcare, education, climate change, and agriculture.”
PM Modi also thanked the government and people of Barbados for awarding him the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados, dedicating the recognition to the people of India.
Prime Minister Mottley called the visit a “historic moment” for the CARICOM nations, highlighting the significance of the CARICOM-India dialogue at the level of Heads of Government. “I think we are all happy that we can have this opportunity to meet with PM Narendra Modi. It is a historic moment for most of us in CARICOM to be able to meet with and have the CARICOM-India dialogue at the level of Heads of Government,” she said.
She also mentioned that the two leaders last met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, underlining how these regular interactions reflect the strength of the relationship between the two regions.
India and Barbados have long enjoyed a strong partnership, cooperating actively in international forums such as the UN, Commonwealth, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Barbados has supported India's candidacy in various multilateral elections, as noted by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Barbados is also home to around 3,000 people of Indian origin, many of whom are now local nationals.
