New Delhi: In a bid to strengthen the country's health infrastructure Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu via video conference on Wednesday, January 12. MBBS seats have increased by 79.60 percent (from 51,348 to 92,222 seats) and PG seats have increased by 80.70 percent (from 31,185 to 56,374 seats) over the last seven years, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). It is to be noted, before 2014, the total number of medical seats was around 82,500. In the last seven years, there has been an increase of around 80 percent, or 66,000 seats. The overall number of medical colleges (including public and private) has increased by 54 percent, from 387 to 596. The new medical colleges are being developed under the Centrally Sponsored 'Establishing of New Medical Colleges Attached to Existing District/Referral Hospitals' scheme. Medical colleges are built under the programme in districts where neither a government nor a private medical college exists.
