PM Modi's Two-Day Visit to Indonesia for ASEAN-India and East Asia Summits

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant two-day journey to Indonesia commencing this Wednesday, where he will actively participate in the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit. These distinguished gatherings are being graciously hosted by Indonesia, which currently chairs the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).

During a media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday, Mr. Saurabh Kumar, the Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs, shared insights into the Prime Minister's agenda. He emphasized the exceptional nature of the 20th ASEAN-India Summit, marking the first such event following the elevation of the India-ASEAN relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in the previous year. Mr. Kumar noted that during this summit, Prime Minister Modi will undertake a comprehensive review of the progress made in ASEAN-India relations, providing valuable guidance for their future development.

Mr. Kumar underscored the critical role of India's relations with ASEAN in the broader context of India's Act-East Policy and its vision for the Indo-Pacific region. The theme of this year's summit, "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth," underscores the profound significance of ASEAN in regional economic progress. He also pointed out that due to the impending G20 Summit, Prime Minister Modi's visit to Indonesia will be relatively brief.

Highlighting India's foundational role in the East Asia Summit, Secretary (East) Kumar stated that this summit provides an excellent platform for leaders to discuss strategies to bolster the East Asia Summit mechanism. Additionally, leaders will engage in candid exchanges regarding regional and global issues of mutual interest and concern.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Indonesia not only reaffirms India's commitment to its relations with ASEAN but also demonstrates its active participation in shaping the future of the East Asia Summit, fostering collaboration and addressing regional and international.
