Poland PM Donald Tusk Highlights India's Key Role in Resolving Russia-Ukraine Conflict

On Thursday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized the significant role India could play in resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking at a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Warsaw, Tusk praised Modi’s commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution to the war.

Tusk noted that Modi had expressed readiness for an immediate, fair end to the conflict, and highlighted India's potential as a key player in this endeavor. "We began our discussion on very sensitive issues, and PM Modi has confirmed his commitment to a peaceful and rightful resolution. We believe India can play an essential and constructive role. Your upcoming visit to Ukraine is expected to be historic," Tusk stated.

In addition to discussing peace efforts, Tusk announced plans to elevate Poland-India relations to a strategic partnership. "We are committed to moving our relationship to the level of strategic partnership. This is more than just a label; it reflects our determination for mutual cooperation across various fields," Tusk added.

The Polish leader also spoke about enhancing collaboration in trade and defense. "We discussed strengthening our cooperation, particularly in defense and trade, where there are significant opportunities for both nations. Poland is ready to contribute to India’s defense modernization with our technological expertise. We are keen on investment and collaboration in this area," Tusk explained.

Prime Minister Modi's visit marks the first time an Indian leader has visited Poland in 45 years, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Tusk described Modi's visit as highly significant and an honor, emphasizing the growing mutual understanding despite historical and geographical differences.

"Despite our different traditions and histories, our countries have a strong understanding and respect for each other's principles and sovereignty. This visit underscores the importance of our evolving relationship," Tusk remarked.

Tusk also congratulated Modi on his recent electoral victory, praising India's democratic governance. "The world admires India for its democratic principles, which are not as prevalent in some regions. Congratulations on your electoral success," Tusk said.

During the second day of his visit, Modi will have several engagements, including talks with President Andrzej Duda, a lunch hosted by Tusk, and a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He will also meet with business leaders and Polish influencers.

Following his time in Poland, Modi will travel to Ukraine, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country, at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
