Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Poland is being hailed as a significant milestone for both political and business relations between the two countries. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years, scheduled from August 21-23, marking a new chapter in the 70-year-long diplomatic relationship between India and Poland.

Dariusz Jonski, a member of the European Parliament, emphasized the importance of this visit, noting that it offers a unique opportunity for discussions on healthcare and IT collaboration. Poland, which is currently facing a shortage of around 25,000 doctors and specialists, is eager to explore potential partnerships with Indian healthcare professionals. Additionally, Poland aims to strengthen ties with Indian companies, particularly in the IT sector, which ranks among the top five in the country.

“This visit is very important for us due to politics and business,” said Jonski. “We have many Indian companies operating in Poland, with around 5,000 Indians residing in our region. We hope to discuss expanding flight connections, healthcare cooperation, and IT collaboration.”

Poland is particularly interested in facilitating the recruitment of foreign doctors, nurses, and specialists who are willing to learn Polish and pass the necessary exams to work in the country. Jonski expressed optimism about the potential for relaxing visa regulations for healthcare professionals and students eager to join Poland’s educational institutions.

Prime Minister Modi will be meeting with his Polish counterpart and the President of Poland during the visit, and he will also engage with the Indian community in Poland, which numbers around 25,000, including 5,000 students. The Indian community in Poland played a significant role during the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine in 2022, with Poland providing crucial assistance during 'Operation Ganga.'

India and Poland have a long-standing relationship that dates back to the 1940s, when more than 6,000 Polish women and children sought refuge in the princely states of Jamnagar and Kolhapur during World War II. This shared history continues to foster strong ties between the two nations.

The visit is expected to further enhance the bilateral relationship, with both countries looking to explore new avenues for cooperation in various fields, including healthcare, IT, and trade.
