India and Malaysia Expand Cooperation with New MoUs on Technology and Education

New Delhi:  India and Malaysia took significant steps to deepen their bilateral relationship through a series of agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed in Delhi. The signing ceremony, held at Hyderabad House, was graced by the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim.

During a joint press conference, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the untapped potential of the partnership between the two nations. He stressed the importance of advancing cooperation in emerging technology sectors, including fintech, semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing. Modi announced plans to link India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Malaysia’s Paynet system, aiming to enhance financial transactions between the two countries.

The MoUs signed during this visit cover a broad range of areas:

  • Recruitment, employment, and repatriation of workers.
  • Collaboration in Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems.
  • Advancement in digital technologies.
  • Cultural, artistic, and heritage exchanges.
  • Tourism, youth, and sports.
  • Public administration and governance reforms.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the focus on educational and professional development, announcing that 100 ITEC scholarships will be allocated specifically for Malaysian students to pursue advanced courses in cybersecurity and AI. Additionally, an Ayurveda Chair will be established at Malaysia’s University of Tumko Abdul Rahman, and a Thiruvalluvar Chair will be set up at another Malaysian university.

Expressing his gratitude, Modi thanked Prime Minister Anwar and his team for their collaborative efforts. He acknowledged the positive trajectory of the India-Malaysia relationship, noting that the partnership has gained significant momentum over the past two years under Anwar’s leadership.

In his remarks, Modi also celebrated the milestone of a decade of partnership between the two countries, highlighting that Malaysian investment in India has surpassed $5 billion. The visit culminated in the decision to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
