Bhopal: The death toll from the collapse of a wall at Datia Fort in Madhya Pradesh has reached seven, with two individuals rescued from the debris. The victims include five members of the same family. The rescued individuals have been admitted to a hospital in Gwalior, where their conditions are reported as critical.
The wall that fell was part of 'Rajgarh Ka Quila,' a centuries-old fort in Datia. The structure had been deteriorating for years, and recent heavy rains led to its collapse early Thursday morning.
Former Minister Narottam Mishra, who previously represented the Datia Assembly constituency, informed Chief Minister Mohan Yadav of the tragedy. Mishra reported that the Chief Minister has promised an ex gratia payment of Rs four lakh to the families of the deceased and enhanced medical treatment for the injured.
The collapse occurred around 4 a.m. Thursday. Local residents managed to rescue two individuals before emergency services arrived. The rescue operation, which involved local police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), continued for over eight hours. Progress was initially slow due to encroachments around the site, but it improved once heavy debris was cleared with JCB machines.
Chief Minister Yadav, who led an emergency meeting with District Collectors, emphasized that excessive rainfall has caused widespread flooding in several parts of the state. He urged both the district administration and the public to remain vigilant to prevent further incidents.
