NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan, sending mild tremors across Delhi and much of North India. The epicenter of the quake was located 25 km south-west of Karor in Pakistan, with a depth of 33 km. The tremors were also felt in Islamabad and Lahore, and extended to several other regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. Afghanistan experienced similar jolts.

This incident marks the second occurrence of mild tremors in Delhi and surrounding areas within two weeks. Previously, on August 29, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 255 km shook Afghanistan.

Social media videos captured the shaking of ceiling fans, chairs, and other objects, which lasted only a few seconds. "Major tremors felt in Delhi NCR," commented a user from Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Delhi's susceptibility to earthquakes is due to its location in an active seismic zone near the Himalayas. The country is divided into four seismic zones, with Zone V being the most seismically active. Delhi falls within Zone IV.

In a related development, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region on last Thursday. This quake also caused mild tremors in the Delhi-NCR region, triggering panic and reports of furniture shaking.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department confirmed that the epicenter was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
