New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday dedicated the new Parliament building to the nation. The inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building began with chanting of mantras and worship as per Vedic customs. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present in the puja along with PM Modi. PM Modi felicitated the workers who contributed to the construction of the building after inaugurating the new Parliament building. Thousands of labourers had been working day and night for more than two years to realise the new modern Parliament building, one of the biggest projects of the Modi government. Separated from any political hostility, 60,000 workers and supervisors were working hard to erect the on-site and off-site building. The entire Parliament house complex was closed a day before the inauguration on Saturday (May 27). Only specially checked cars, VIPs, security personnel, police and other staff were allowed inside through the boom barrier. Barricades were put up at Iron Gate 8, through which the workers were able to move inside. What did the workers who built the new Parliament building say? Arun, 40, a mason from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, said he has been working 12 hours a day for the past few years, earning around Rs. 17,000 a month. "Almost 99 per cent of the work has been completed. We have worked 24×7 in two shifts. We did not stop even during the Corona epidemic. The whole journey, he says, began with a phone call he received in February 2021. "He asked me if I could work in Parliament House in Delhi. I couldn't be happier. Who would want to miss such an opportunity?" Imran, 24, a labourer from Bihar, said, "Scaffolding work is still going on in some parts of the building and it will take a few more months to complete." Ramdin Dagar, another worker from Madhya Pradesh, said that most of the work is done inside the building except for the necessary decoration in some rooms. Naresh, a mason from Madhya Pradesh, smiles and says about the new Parliament building, 'Ek dum jannat'. For thousands of people like Arun, Imran, Naresh, it was a role that they will continue to play in the pages of history and the experience they will carry with them. Ram Murthy, a resident of Morena, says, "The work was very difficult, but if people ask us what we did, we can say that we built the Parliament house, that too in two years. We have seen the entire building being built in front of our eyes." Akash Kumar, a 20-year-old labourer from Bihar who worked as a asphalt layer, says, "We have been working for more than 15 hours for 5-6 days. Some days we were even asked to do more than that. Now that the roads within the campus are paved, it's time to breathe." Akash's colleague Sohit Kumar Sharma, 27, says, "We slept only two hours yesterday. You have to do so much for the country. We are not going to sit inside the Parliament House, but it is good to see for the country." 21 opposition parties boycott inauguration ceremony of new Parliament building On one hand, 60 thousand workers and workers are excited and celebrating this wonderful gift to the country, on the other hand, 21 opposition parties have boycotted the opening ceremony of the new Parliament.
