NEW DELHI: An RTI application has revealed that more than one lakh crore rupees have been deposited in the accounts opened under the Jan Dhan scheme. In his first (2014) Independence Day address after gaining power, Prime Minister Modi had announced the Prime Minister's Jan Dhan Yojana for connecting ordinary citizens with banks and integrated development. The objective of the scheme was to connect the common man with the bank. It was formally launched on 28th August 2014. The scheme provides for opening of accounts on zero balance. The Prime Minister's Jan Dhan Yojana is aimed at linking the part of the society which could not open accounts in banks due to economic failure. It was also aimed at direct the passage of grants under the government's schemes to the bank account. When Chandrasekhar Gaur, a social worker from Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh, sought details of the Prime Minister's Jan Dhan Yojana from the Finance Ministry under the RTI Act, it was revealed that as on July 17, 2019, 36 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme. , of which Rs 1,00,831 crore is deposited.
