KALABURAGI: Preparations are underway for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Karnataka's Kalaburagi district on January 19. This is Modi's second trip this month to the poll-bound Karnataka. At a large celebration in Malkhed during the visit, Modi would hand out property records to the occupants of "tandas," or temporary homes for SC/STs in villages. These documents are being given out to 51,900 tanda citizens for the first time in Karnataka's history. The beneficiaries are selected from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region districts of Raichur, Yadgir, Bidar and Vijayapura, said the Revenue Department officials. To make it a successful occasion, the state's minister of revenue, R. Ashoka, has been meeting with local leaders in Kalaburagi. A huge helipad, is being built for the event, while 600 cooks will be deployed to cook food and 200 counters will be opened on the day of the event. The beneficiaries will be brought in 2,582 buses, said the Minister. AICC President Mallikarjuna Kharge comes from Kalaburagi, and after losing in the most recent parliamentary elections, he hopes to show his strength in the upcoming state Assembly elections. The BJP, which is currently in power in Karnataka, intends to thwart his aspirations throughout the state's whole northern area, not only in Kalaburagi.
