There is a plan to waive the registration fee for electric and hybrid vehicles in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, an 8 to 10 percent fee is charged on the registration of these vehicles in UP. If the registration fee is waived under this new policy, then the price of hybrid and electric vehicles can be reduced by up to Rs 4 lakh. UP government's decision and meeting On July 5, the UP government issued an order to waive off 8 to 10 percent registration tax on plug-in hybrid cars. This could reduce the on-road price of these cars by up to Rs 4 lakh. Following this order, a meeting was held with major vehicle manufacturers and officials on Sunday. The meeting was attended by the chief secretary, officials of the transport department, and officials of the industrial development department. Issues raised in the meeting Representatives from several major auto companies such as Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, and Bajaj also attended the meeting. According to sources, auto companies were told in the meeting that the incentives being given for plug-in and hybrid cars are aimed at replacing petrol and diesel vehicles, not electric vehicles. An official said that the discount on registration fees may be different for hybrid and electric vehicles. Concerns of companies Representatives from Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and Mahindra & Mahindra raised concerns that exempting only hybrid vehicles could hurt the electric car segment. The companies suggested that the July 5 order be applied to all green technologies along with hybrids. Statement of the Chief Secretary The Chief Secretary said during the meeting that the UP EV policy aims to replace petrol and diesel vehicles, and hence there is a plan to encourage both hybrid and electric vehicles. UP's EV policy will support both types of vehicles. This new initiative of the UP government can prove to be an important step for the promotion of hybrid and electric vehicles, which will promote environmental protection and the use of clean energy.
