CAIRO – Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has emphasised his country's support for the United Nations' (UN) role in confronting global and regional concerns such as crime, terrorism, and the threat of the dreaded durg. According to the Egyptian presidency, Sisi made the remarks during a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Waly in Cairo. The President also expressed his support for bolstering existing initiatives to share expertise in areas relevant to the office's mission, with the goal of reactivating UN drug and crime programmes. Waly, for one, reiterated the office's reliance on Egypt's sustained assistance for its efforts in the coming months to maximise the international community's capacities to combat the risks presented by transnational organised crime. She also emphasised the importance of increased international efforts to combat corruption, its detrimental effects on communities, crime prevention measures, and the development of effective criminal justice systems. In light of recent regional developments in Afghanistan, Waly examined the axes of international collaboration under the umbrella of UNODC, particularly in regard to arms smuggling, drug trafficking, and the worsening of terrorism and refugees.
