Delhi: Chargesheet against priest, three others in Minor Dalit Girl's 'Gangrape and Murder'

The Delhi Police has filed a charge sheet in the case of a 9-year-old girl. The case was reported of gang-raped and slain inside a cremation by a priest and three others earlier this month. A 55-year-old crematorium priest and three of his staff were listed as suspects in the final report.

In this case, all four individuals have been detained. The Crime Branch identified them as Radhe Shyam (55), Kuldeep Kumar (63), Laxmi Narain (48), and Mohd Salim (49). A charge sheet was filed under several IPC sections including murder, gangrape, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, and causing the disappearance of evidence along with POCSO Act and 3 SC/ST Act. For the unversed once, on August 1, the 9-year-old girl went to a crematorium near her home in the Old Nangal neighborhood to get cold water that was when the incident occurred. A priest working at the cremation and three other people notified the child's mother that she had died of electrocution a few hours later. The priest and the other men then urged the girl's mother not to report the accident to the police, claiming that doing so would result in a case and, ultimately, a postmortem, during which the girl's organs would be taken. The men then began cremating the girl, but the girl's mother raised an alert and dialed her husband's number. Over 100 locals also gathered at the crematorium, which was reported to the police.

However, locals intervened and stopped it, though only charred remains were recovered from the pyre. It is learned that police also examined the water cooler and spoke to locals in detail. Since the girl’s body was burnt, the forensic team was unable to conclusively ascertain rape or assault. Sources also claimed the four had “confessed” to the crime. Police did not share details of each man’s alleged role in the crime. Biswal said police had committed to filing a charge sheet within 30 days after a high-level review meeting by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The matter will now go to a fast-track court
