CHENNAI: Protests are being held across Tamil Nadu by the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) and the Tamil People's Democratic Party (TPDK) in response to the damage of a statue of Periyar, the founder of the Dravidian movement, in Vellalore, Coimbatore. The protest continues after a statue of social reformer Periyar EV Ramasamy was found desecrated in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday morning. A pair of slippers were found garlanded on the statue in front of the Periyar study centre in Vellalore. A saffron-colored powder was sprayed on the head. Members of the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) were notified by residents in the area, and they hurried to the scene. They alerted the Podanur police station, which dispatched a team to the scene. Apart from cleaning the saffron-colored powder, the police and DK workers inspected the statue and removed the slippers. Later, DK workers mounted a protest in front of the statue, demanding that those responsible for the sacrilege be arrested. After receiving assurance from the authorities, they withdrew their protest. In order to identify and track down the criminals, the police have analysed images from a few surveillance cameras in the neighbourhood.
