Pune: Thousands Of Fish Floating Over Jhambhulwadi Lake Due To Oxygen Drop

The pathetic condition of Pune municipal corporation can be gauged from the deteriorating condition of biodiversity there. Recently thousands of fish were found dead in the lake. Many reports have been sent to the PMC and despite that civic body failed to do the needful. The report revealed that due to a drop in the oxygen level in the heavily polluted Indrayani river, hundreds of fish were found dead along the banks. These fishes have died in the last few days after pollution took a toll on the river that originates in Lonavala and passes through Pune before reaching Alandi.

As per Nitin Shinde, sub-regional officer (Pune rural) of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), the drop in Oxygen occurred due to hyacinth. A thick layer of hyacinth has been formed on the floating water for a few kilometers which is proving deadly for the fishes. “A thick layer of hyacinth is floating for a few kilometers on the river, making the water stagnant. Hyacinth reduces dissolved oxygen levels significantly, which is hazardous for fish. Thus, we notice such instances often during summer,” Shinde quoted.

Also, Sewage water and waste from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is dumped into the river which has worsened the pollution level of the water body. Shinde said "The MPCB had earlier requested PCMC to install a sewage treatment plant in the area to ensure untreated water is not dumped directly into the river. However, their request went unheard. Our field officers have collected water samples from various sites for testing. The test results would reveal the contents of the river water,” said Shinde.
