Amritsar: Punjab CM Amarinder Singh has asked PM Narendra Modi to give Bharat Ratna to hockey veteran Balbir Singh. He has written a letter to PM Modi seeking to honour India's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna for three-time Olympic medallist Balbir Singh Sr. On Thursday, Amarinder Singh tweeted, "In a letter to the Prime Minister urging to give Bharat Ratna to Balbir Singh (Senior) for his outstanding performance in hockey," he also tagged PM Narendra Modi in the tweet. It may be mentioned that CM Amarinder himself went to the hospital to award Maharaja Ranjit Singh award to Balbir Singh for his outstanding performance in hockey. Last month, CM Amarinder met Balbir Singh (Senior) at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh and gave him the honour. On this occasion, CM Amarinder also provided an amount of five lakh rupees for his treatment. Balbir Singh, 94, has a number of records. Singh was part of the Indian Olympic gold medal-winning team at the 1948 London Olympics, the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. He was the captain of the Indian Hockey team at the Melbourne Olympics as well as the flag bearer of the Indian Olympic team.
