Punjab Govt launches portal for direct seeding of rice portal

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday launched a direct seeding of rice (DSR) portal to facilitate farmers to consent to their land being planted with this technique.

Mann praised this farmer-friendly initiative, saying it would be useful in compiling all data about each and every farmer who has chosen the DSR technique, as well as ensuring payment of Rs 1,500 per acre to genuine beneficiaries in a fair and transparent manner through this portal after proper verification.

Following proper verification, the incentive amount would be instantly put into the bank accounts of the relevant farmers, according to Additional Chief Secretary Agriculture, who briefed the Chief Minister on the portal's operations. At least 15-20% of water will be saved if this breakthrough solution is implemented. Furthermore, it will aid in effective water percolation, hence improving groundwater levels through correct recharging.  This cost-effective strategy would also save about Rs 4,000 per acre in labour costs.

The state government has already deployed 3,000 policemen and officials from various ministries to oversee DSR activities, including providing correct technical support to farmers and verifying the area planted using this modern technology.

During the Kharif season, farmers from across the state are scheduled to plant paddy, especially basmati, over an area of 30 lakh hectares (75 lakh acres). According to current data, paddy was sown through DSR in an area of 15 lakh acres (six lakh hectares) last year, and the state government has set a target of 30 lakh acres for this season.
