Rahul Gandhi Slams Indian Tax System, Calls It Loot of the Poor

JHARKHAND: In a sharp criticism of the BJP-led government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged that India’s tax system is skewed against the poor. Speaking at a rally in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, on Saturday, Gandhi argued that the tax structure unfairly burdens lower-income groups while benefiting the wealthy.

"The Indian tax structure is designed to loot the poor," Gandhi said, suggesting that industrialists, like Adani, pay taxes comparable to those of the average citizen. He claimed that valuable lands, including the Rs 1 lakh-crore worth of land in Dharavi, are being handed over to private entities, benefiting a few at the expense of the many.

Gandhi also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that while the Prime Minister enjoys extravagant travel modes like seaplanes, everyday citizens, particularly women and the poor, continue to face rising living costs. Gandhi claimed that while certain groups such as Scheduled Tribes (STs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) represent nearly 90 percent of the population, their presence in government institutions remains disproportionately low.

"We aim to allocate funds to the poor that match the amount waived for big business debts under Modi’s leadership," Gandhi added, promising greater equity in government spending.
