Ranchi: In Jharkhand, the highest number of 'millionaire' candidates are from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the first phase of the assembly elections to be held on November 30. Voting will be held in 13 assembly seats in the first phase. BJP and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) have fielded candidates in all 13 seats. Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and RJD have fielded candidates for six, four and three seats respectively. The JMM, Congress and the RJD are contesting the state assembly elections in an alliance.

In the first phase, 10 out of the 13 candidates of BJP are 'crorepatis'. Congress candidate K.N. from Daltonganj seat Tripathi is the richest candidate. His assets are worth Rs 53 crore. The poorest candidates are from JVM-P. Rajpal Singh, who is contesting from Manika seat, has assets worth only Rs 8.71 lakh. Seven and five candidates of the JVM-P and Congress are millionaires. Five of the JVM-P's 13 candidates are tainted or facing various criminal prosecutions.

BJP candidate Shashi Bhushan Mehta, contesting from Panki seat, has 11 criminal cases registered, including the murder of a teacher. He runs a school in Ranchi. He joined the BJP before the election was announced. There was a lot of drama when he joined the BJP. BJP, AJSU and JVM-P have fielded one woman candidate each, and Congress, JMM and RJD alliance have not fielded any women candidate in the first phase.
