SRINAGAR: Authorities on Thursday imposed restrictions to prevent members of the Shia community from taking out a traditional procession on the occasion of Ashura in the Abi Gujar area of Srinagar in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Let us tell you that this is the last day of the 10-day mourning of Muharram. Officials said that restrictions have been imposed in the Abi Gujar area under the Kothibagh police station area and considerable numbers of security personnel are deployed to maintain law and order on the 10th day of Muharram.
Police on Tuesday detained several people from the Shia community at different places in the city as they were trying to take out a procession. The traditional Muharram procession used to pass through Abi Gujar, Lal Chowk, and Dalgate areas but was banned after the rise of terrorism in the 90s, as the administration says it was used to propagate separatist politics. Union Minister Jitendra Singh had recently said that there is a change in the thinking of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and terrorism in Kashmir is now in its 'final stage.'
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Singh said that a change is visible in the thinking of the people. The people of Srinagar roaming in the open now want change and want to be a part of PM Modi's new India like the people of other parts of the country. He had said that I understand that this is the last phase of terrorism.
