Raipur: The Housing and Environment Minister of Chhattisgarh, Om Prakash Choudhary, has ordered the cancellation of ten projects worth a total of Rs 218 crore awarded to 'Raipur Construction Limited.' Owned by Mohammad Asghar, the brother of former Congress cabinet minister Mohammad Akbar, the contracts were terminated due to poor performance and prolonged delays in completing construction projects, mostly under the smart city initiative in Chhattisgarh's new capital, Nava Raipur-Atal Nagar. Choudhary emphasized that the contracts were revoked due to the executing agency's subpar performance, despite repeated extensions by the previous Congress government. Notices were served, but the projects failed to meet deadlines. The minister stressed zero tolerance for substandard work and highlighted the need for caution to ensure timely completion of all initiatives. Addressing concerns about the company's ties to Mohammad Akbar's family, Choudhary acknowledged it as a serious matter. An internal team thoroughly investigated the issue before deciding to cancel the Rs 218 crore projects. Notably, Mohammad Asghar was hired despite violating guidelines. The BJP government is swiftly advancing the development of Nava Raipur, the new smart city capital. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's administration directed the completion of outstanding projects by the extended deadline of June 2024 under the Smart City Mission. Greater Raipur will serve as a model for the development of Nava Raipur, Raipur, and Durg-Bhilai, forming a State Capital Region structured similarly to the National Capital Region. The government has devised a plan for the project, focusing on infrastructure development, residential and commercial sectors, and improved connectivity between Nava Raipur, Raipur, and Durg-Bhilai.
