Bangalore: In a strong rebuke to the BJP-led Union government, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticized the formation of a high-level committee to review internal reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC). Siddaramaiah alleged that the committee is a mere ploy to mislead the Dalit community and lacks genuine concern. He pointed out that previous commissions, such as the Justice Usha Mehra Commission, had already concluded that sub-categorization and internal reservation for SCs require constitutional amendments.
Siddaramaiah emphasized that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes had also expressed a similar opinion, questioning the need for another high-level committee. He urged the Central Government to present a bill to amend Section 341 of the Constitution in Parliament, emphasizing that constitutional amendments are necessary for changes in the SC list. The CM criticized state BJP leaders for double standards, accusing them of spreading misinformation and following anti-Dalit agendas dictated by the RSS.
Addressing statements from former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other BJP leaders, Siddaramaiah highlighted their rejection of the Sadashiva Commission report when they were in power. He accused state BJP leaders of making false accusations against his government and urged them to focus on pressuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi to amend the Constitution and fulfill the longstanding demand for internal reservation for Scheduled Castes.
The Chief Minister expressed concern that the BJP's actions reflect political malice and a lack of commitment to addressing the decades-old demand for SC internal reservation.
