Russian forces seize part of major city in eastern Ukraine

KIEV: According to the General Staff of the country's Armed Forces, Russian forces have taken control of a portion of Severodonetsk city, the administrative centre of the Ukraine-controlled sector of the eastern Luhansk region.

Sergey Gaidai, the commander of the Luhansk regional military administration, reportedly announced on Facebook that Russia has controlled 80% of Severodonetsk.  According to Gaidai, street combat in the city persisted, and Ukrainian forces launched counter-attacks in some districts of Severodonetsk. During the assault for the strategic city, Ukrainian troops seized six Russian servicemen, he claimed.

Russians are preparing a mop-up operation around Severodonetsk, said the Ukrainian authorities.

On the 30th of May, Russian troops shelled an armoured truck evacuating city population.
