JUBA: South Sudan's parties to the unity government on August 4 extended the transitional period by two years. As per Xinhua news, President Salva Kiir said that his government is not extending the transitional phase to remain in power but rather to get the nation ready for elections and a peaceful transfer of power. "We have decided to prepare the soil over the next 24 months to plant the seeds for the South Sudan election with a unified army, visionary constitutions, and firm understanding of our country upon which to build a government that can complete the war on poverty, ignorance, and hopelessness," Kiir said on Thursday in Juba. After approving a blueprint for holding elections and extending the transitional period of the administration for 24 months, the South Sudanese leader was addressing. First Vice-President Riek Machar signed on behalf of the opposition coalition, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition (SPLM-IO), while Gabriel Changson Chang signed on behalf of the opposition party, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance.
