CAIRO: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry sent a letter to the president of the UNSE on Friday to express Egypt’s formal objection to Ethiopia's steps to unilaterally continue filling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) without reaching an agreement with Egypt and Sudan.
"Egypt completely rejects Ethiopia's continuing of filling the GERD unilaterally without reaching an agreement with Egypt and Sudan", the letter read. While Egypt remained committed to the need to set up a GERD agreement that serves the interests of the three nations, Shoukry underlined that Egypt will not put up with any interference with its rights, water security, or any harm to the potential of the Egyptian people.
He urged the UNSC to see to the execution of its presidential statement, which requires the three nations to begin negotiations as soon as possible to come to a consensus on the dam.
The Ethiopian government informed Egypt on July 26 that it was continuing to fill the dam's reservoir during the current flood season. This information was released by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since April 2021, the Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia-led GERD negotiations have been on hold as a result of protracted discussions that have lasted for years without producing anything.
udan proposed altering the negotiation processes by bringing the UN, the EU, and the US under the African mediation umbrella in response to the impasse.
While Egypt and Sudan, two nations downstream in the Nile Basin, are worried that the project would influence their share of the water resources, Ethiopia, which began construction on the GERD in 2011, anticipates that the dam will generate more than 6,000 megawatts of energy.
