Sensex, Nifty Gain 6th day in a row; Top stocks to watch today

Benchmarks for Indian equities rose on Wednesday, extending their winning streak to six day,  in yet another tumultuous trading session.

The broader Nifty 50 of the National Stock Exchange was up 42.70 points, or 0.25 percent, at 17,388.15 after ending slightly higher in the previous session. The  BSE Sensex gained 214.17 points, or 0.37 percent, to conclude at 58,350.53.

Among the stocks that make up the Sensex, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys, Titan, Asian Paints, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Industries were the top gainers. All sectoral indices except information technology finished in the negative.

The BSE smallcap index decreased 0.28 percent, while the midcap index dropped 0.6 percent.  Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, and Bajaj Finance, on the other hand, lagged behind.

Auto company's stocks witnessed selling pressure after the recent rally. Maruti Suzuki slumped 2.29 percent to Rs 8956.70. Mahindra & Mahindra closed 0.12 percent lower at Rs. 1253.70.  On Pharma stocks, Sun Pharma slipped 2.17 percent to Rs. 896.90.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors continued to be net purchasers in the capital markets on Tuesday, purchasing shares worth 825.18 crore.

International markets: Asia's markets saw gains in Seoul, Tokyo, and Hong Kong while falling in Shanghai. During deals at the halfway point of the session, European stocks were trading up. On Tuesday, U.S. markets had a lower closing price.

Brent crude, the international standard for crude oil, fell 0.91 percent to USD 99.63 a barrel.
