Sensex, Nifty trade higher ; Banking stocks rise

Indian share markets have started the weekly options expiry session with gains amidst submissive global cues. The BSE Sensex opened 106 higher at 44,724 while the NSE Nifty 50 index traded above the mark of 13,150 - up 36 points at 9.40 am.

All sectoral indices have opened with gains. The PSU Bank, Nifty Bank, and the Media index are up 0.9% each while the Nifty Auto, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty index are trading with gains of 0.6% each. The Metal index has opened with gains of 0.8%.

Broader markets also have opened with gains. The Nifty Midcap index has opened with gains of 0.7%, as has the Small-cap index which opened higher by a similar height. In today's session, PSU stocks are once again in focus with GAIL India again as the top gainer, Coal India also gaining in trade today.   

Wipro secured a multi-year deal from Verifone for its cloud services and was up by 1.09 percent. Shares of HDFC Life, according to a report, that Standard Life will sell up to 2.78 crore equity shares of the company to raise up to Rs 1770-Cr.
