Imtiaz Ali is famous for making unconventional love stories relatable to society. He worked with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time in Jab Harry Met Sejal and Shahrukh Khan called him Yash Chopra of the modern age. On getting such compliment, he said, "I don’t even accept or register this comment [in my head]. It is not possible for me to actually digest this comment. I can’t accept it and then start to think, ‘why Shah Rukh said it and whether it is valid? Am I really like Yash Chopra in any way?’ I can’t. So, there is no question of feeling pressurised or happy. I have to accept it in a kind of superficial manner and with grace, but the fact of the matter is that I am not accepting this." On completing 12 years in Bollywood, Imtiaz said, "I don’t know, I am not too sure. There are changes but I can’t pinpoint them. Basically, my process is very simple — I get a story in my mind and I gradually get very excited about it and one day I write it and then I want to make it. I am following the same process even now. It is not as if I think about it from any other point of view keeping market, critics or anything else in mind. I just get excited and I am like, ‘this is the story I have to make’. So, I think that has remained the same. I feel it’s (the urge to make a film) a kind of an infection and when it refuses to die down, then you have to do the operation, which is called a film."
