New Delhi: The Election Commission has given a big relief to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The Commission has relaxed the ban on CM not to contest elections. The Election Commission has reduced the six-year electoral ban to one year and one month. This decision will help Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to save his chair. The commission banned Tamang from contesting elections for six years. This ban was deemed to have come into force from August 10, 2018. Tamang's jail sentence in the corruption case was completed on the same day. Due to this ban, there was a danger of Tamang being the Chief Minister. In July this year, Tamang had asked the commission to reduce the ban imposed under Section 11. Only after this, action was taken to reduce his ban. The Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and the two Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra have signed the order to reduce the punishment on behalf of the Commission. After this, Tamang was sworn in as Chief Minister on 27 April. But he could not enter the assembly elections due to the ban, while the Election Act makes it mandatory for the assembly to take membership within six months of his swearing-in.
