NEW DELHI: Sonia Gandhi has been elected as the interim president of the party at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee to elect the National President of the Congress on Saturday. Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Harish Rawat told reporters after the meeting that Sonia Gandhi has been elected as interim president of the party and Rahul Gandhi's resignation has also been accepted. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Congress General Secretary Venugopal and party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that three resolutions were unanimously adopted at the second meeting of the CWC. 1- Rahul Gandhi emerged as a new ray of hope and led the party. The party thankes him for this. Rahul Gandhi resigned after the Lok Sabha elections. His resignation has been accepted. However, he has been urged to continue to guide the party. 2- The Working Committee deliberated the views of all the state leaders of the Congress and passed a resolution that everyone wanted Rahul Gandhi to continue as President. Rahul Gandhi was requested to withdraw his resignation which he rejected and said that the link of responsibility should start with him. Sonia Gandhi was urged to take over the command of the party and she has been appointed interim president of the party till a full-time president is elected. 3- The issue of Jammu and Kashmir was discussed in the Working Committee and a resolution was passed that the government would be asked to send a group of opposition parties to Jammu and Kashmir to take stock of the situation.
