State of economy cause of 'extreme concern': Chidambaram voiced at Chintan Shivir

UDAIPUR:  P Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, said on Saturday that the health of the economy is a source of "great concern," and that it may be necessary to consider a policy reset in light of global and domestic trends.

Chidambaram claimed during a news conference that the current government's "hallmark" in the last eight years has been slower development, and that the post-pandemic recovery has been "indifferent and halting."

Chidambaram, who chairs the economic panel appointed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to oversee deliberations at the three-day 'Chintan Shivir' here, also stated that the time has come for a comprehensive review of fiscal relations between the Centre and the States.

The effects of the Modi government's poorly-drafted and unfairly-implemented GST legislation are clear for all to see, according to the Congress leader.  "The States' budgetary condition is vulnerable like never before, and urgent remedial measures are required," remarked the former finance minister, flanked by Gourav Vallabh and Supriya Shrinate, members of the panel.
