Will SC/ST get reservation in promotions as well? SC to pronounce verdict today

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will today pronounce its verdict on the long-pending issue of reservation in promotions in government jobs. The hearing in the matter of giving reservations in promotions to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in government jobs has been completed. A three-judge bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao heard all the parties on the matter, including Attorney General KK Venugopal, Additional Solicitor General Balbir Singh and other senior lawyers appearing for various states.

The central government had told the court that it was true that even after 75 years of the country's independence, the people of the SC-ST community could not be brought to the same level of merit as the forward classes. The Supreme Court, while completing the hearing on the case, had reserved its verdict on October 26, 2021.

Venugopal had argued in the court that it is far more difficult for people belonging to SC and ST communities to get higher posts in group 'A' category jobs. He had said that the time has come that the Supreme Court should give some solid basis for SC, ST and OBC (Other Backward Classes) to fill up the vacancies.
