New Delhi: The Pegasus espionage case is scheduled to be heard again in the Supreme Court today. Earlier last Thursday, the apex court, while hearing petitions seeking an independent probe into the alleged Pegasus espionage case, had said that the allegations of espionage are serious if media reports are true. On the other hand, Kapil Sibal termed the matter as serious and appealed to the CJI to send a notice to the Centre. On the other hand, the Defence Ministry said in Parliament on Monday that it has not transacted in any way with the NSO group, the manufacturer of the spy software Pegasus. The country is currently in a heated political debate over Pegasus following allegations of spying through spyware. Earlier, hearing the Pegasus case, the apex court had said that if the news in the newspaper is correct, the matter is serious, but at the same time raised the question as to why the case did not complain so far when it was detected in 2019 and why it is being taken up now. The court had also said that most of the petitions are based on media reports. The court decided to consider the matter as serious but did not issue a formal notice on the petitions. Meanwhile, the court had ordered the case to be posted again on August 10 and asked the petitioners to give a copy of the petition to the Central Government in advance so that someone from the government is present to accept the notice on that day.
