Swapnasandhani marks its anniversary digitally

Every year on May 29, theatre group Swapnasandhani celebrates its birth anniversary with a new play and a theatre festival. However, the pandemic has upset the group’s plans for the last two years. This year, the founding members Kaushik Sen, Reshmi Sen and Ditipriya Sarkar joined a digital live session that was hosted by Riddhi Sen. Anirban Bhattacharya too joined the session. The group celebrated its 29th anniversary this year.

Elaborating on his connection with Swapnasandhani, Anirban recalled that his connection started when he joined his university in Kolkata. “In 2004, I joined Rabindra Bharati University and since 2005, I got completely involved with Bengali theatre. I started watching Swapnasandhani productions. I remember, the group used to stage theatre at Sujata Sadan. Swapnasandhani’s productions attracted me the most because of its choice of text and reflection of socio-political affairs,” he said. Anirban also recited a poem by Jibananda Das.

Meanwhile, talking about the journey diluting pandemic, Kaushik said, “The primary objective of a theatre group is to carry on with its work. Theatre is not only about text and theory. It is about execution, enactment, performance. While we are homebound like all the other groups right now, it is important that many groups staged new productions, including the revival of Mephisto, Kobir Bondhura, and so on, during the interim period between the first and the second wave of the pandemic.”
