Sweden elects Magdalena Andersson first female Prime Minister

Swedan: Sweden's parliament confirmed Magdalena Andersson as the country's first female Prime Minister on Wednesday, electing the finance minister who also happens to be the Social Democratic Party's new leader.

According to sources, Andersson will enter office after meeting with King Carl XVI Gustaf on Friday, leaving her fewer than ten months to prepare for the country's general elections in 2022.

Sweden is the only Nordic country that has never had a woman elected as its leader.

The development marked a landmark for Sweden, which had been regarded as one of Europe's most progressive countries in terms of gender relations for decades but had yet to have a woman in the highest governmental position. Mr. Lofven's government characterises itself as feminist, emphasising the importance of gender equality in national and international efforts.

Amineh Kakabaveh, an independent lawmaker who backed Ms. Andersson, said in a speech to parliament that Sweden is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the decision to introduce universal and equal suffrage in the Scandinavian country.
