Takht Sri Keshghar Sahib: Birthplace of Khalsa

Takht Sri Keshghar Sahib is situated at Anandpur Sahib, Ropar, Punjab is one of the most holy places of the Sikhs. Anandpur Sahib means the City of Spiritual Bliss.

Takht Sri Keshghar sahib is the birthplace of the Khalsa. The order of the Khalsa was founded here by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. The Guru Sahib called for a special congregation on the Vaisakhi day of 1699 with thousands of Sikhs in attendance.

Takht Sri Keshghar Sahib stands at the place where Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the Panj Pyaras the five beloved ones and administered Amrit to them.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji abolished the centuries-old caste system on the sway of Vaisakhi in 1699 by formalizing Sikh doctrine in the idea of the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh eliminated all racial prejudices based on status, caste, and birthright in one fell swoop.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the five Panj and asked them to initiate the guru into a new order. Guru Gobind Singh showed that historical prejudices were no longer acceptable. This changed the course of human history in this part of the world. However, it was also seen as a threat to the established order.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji required Khalsa to wear five Karkars i.e. Kesh, kanga, kara, kachori, and kirpan at this sacred place from Kurehts. The Guru gave the appellation of Singh to men and Kaur to women to be used after their first names.

Anandpur Sahib zone Kirtpur Sahib to Nangal which was known as Hathaut which means adobe of elephants. It was a dense forest with a thick growth of trees and bushes. Guru Sahib turned this haunting forest into Spiritual Place.

One of the five Takhts in Sikhism, Takht Kesgarh Sahib is named after the residences of the final two Sikh Gurus, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. In addition, it was here that Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa Panth in 1699. The ancient Anandgarh Qila site and building were replaced with a new one in the 1930s. The Sarai Ganga stream of the Sutlej River formerly flowed southwest from the location of Anandpur Sahib, but its path has since shifted.

The Qilas (meaning "fortress"), constructed by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib are:

1. Takht Kesgarh Sahib Qila at the center (now a Takhat)

2. Anandgarh Qila (fort of bliss)

3. Lohgarh Qila (fort of steel)

4. Holgarh Qila (fort of color)

5. Fatehgarh Qila (fort of victory)

6. Taragarh Qila (fort of stars)

All the forts were joined together with earthworks and tunnels. All Qila is Situated at Anandpur Sahib. In this Qilas one Qila is now Takht of Sikhs Takht Kesgarh Sahib Qila. The fort of Anandgarh was located at a central location whilst the forts of Lohgarh, Holgarh, Fatehgarh, and Taragarh formed a circular pattern around it. The original structures of the forts were destroyed by Kar Seva renovators in the 20th century and marble Gurdwaras were constructed in their former location.
