KABUL: Afghanistan's Taliban-led government has declared a state of emergency due to heavy snow and rain that has inundated the country, and has ordered provincial officials to prepare for the bad weather. According to local reports, an official from the Ministry of Disaster Management told Radio Free Afghanistan (REF/RL) on Wednesday that they had dispatched material to regions where distribution is still underway. The official went on to say that they were in communication with the Ministry of Public Works and private companies to quickly clear roads that had been closed owing to severe snowfall. Due to heavy snowfall, the Salang Highway, which connects the Afghan capital with the northern provinces, has been closed. Snow and rain have pounded 32 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, clogging roads and causing floods. Officials revealed earlier this week that seven people were killed and 26 others were injured in several road incidents caused by the heavy snow.
