New Delhi: India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier Vikrant has begun testing at sea today. It is the largest and most complex warship built in the country. The Indian Navy termed it as a "proud and historic" day for the country and said India has become one of the select countries that have indigenously designed, built, and integrated state-of-the-art aircraft carriers with a unique capacity. He explained that the ship weighs 40,000 tonnes and is fully prepared for the first time tested at sea. A ship named it played an important role in the 1971 war 50 years ago. The aircraft carrier is likely to be inducted into the Indian Navy fleet in the latter half of next year. "This is a proud and historic day for the country as it has left for the first time for sea testing today in the 50th year of its illustrious predecessor, who played a key role in the victory in the 1971 war," Indian navy spokesman Commander Vivek Madhawal said. He further said that it is the largest and most complex warship built in India. He said this is a proud and historic day under the 'Self-Reliant India' and 'Make in India' initiatives.
