Texas Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Brutal Murder of Wife

TEXAS CRIME: A Texas man, Jared James Dicus, has received a 40-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the horrific murder of his wife, Anggy Diaz, in 2023.

Waller County Criminal District Attorney Sean G. Whittmore announced on Wednesday, July 31, that Dicus accepted a plea deal regarding the gruesome killing of his wife, just three months into their marriage. Diaz, 21, was found dismembered in a home reportedly owned by her in-laws.

The discovery was made by Diaz’s in-laws, who immediately alerted authorities. According to Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry, Dicus’s father called the police upon finding the body, and Dicus later confessed to the murder during police questioning.

Dicus will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division. During the pre-trial phase, there were concerns about his mental competency, but a court-ordered evaluation confirmed he was fit to stand trial.

As part of the plea agreement, Dicus waived his right to appeal and any potential defenses, including an insanity defense. Diaz’s family was informed of the plea terms before they were finalized. Dicus will be eligible for parole in 2043, although this does not guarantee parole will be granted.

Sheriff Guidry noted that police had previously been called to the couple’s residence, but never for anything as violent as this incident. The crime has deeply affected both families involved.

Guidry described the scene as "gruesome," noting that both families would be forever changed by the tragedy. He expressed hope that justice would be served in the best possible way under the circumstances.

Diaz had been decapitated, according to multiple reports. In a press conference last year, Sheriff Guidry stated that officers were confronted with a "dismembered body" and a home covered in blood.

Waller County District Attorney Sean G. Whittmore emphasized the county’s zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence. "Heinous crimes like this will not go unanswered. We will seek justice for the victims of domestic violence and send a message to perpetrators that here, we fight for our victims," Whittmore said, thanking the Waller County Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation and service to the victim’s family and the community.
